Just Returned From Cuba: The greatest natural resource is the people
There have been no updates recently on this BLog as I have been out of the country since the end of July and have only returned recently. Cuba is a beautiful country and the people there - all the ones that met with me - are very happy. They do not have to worry about rent payments, free health, dental coverage, free education - including higher education -. They have few reasons to complain about their lives. Many homes look quite poor from the outside, but this is an illusion. The places do not get painted and suffer from a degree of tropical decay, still the decor inside is breathtaking in the private houses where I was a guest. I seen the Televisions, VCR's, DVD players, Sony Playstations... the average Cuban is not lacking in consumer/luxury goods. The unethical embargo against Cuba being imposed by the sick government of the undemocratic United States is what makes life difficult for the average Cuban. The average Cuban does not blame Socialism or Fidal Casro for these woes but the evil U.S. government.
Fidal Castro said in his speech in Harlem, N.Y.C. that the greatest natural resouce that Cuba has is the people who reside there. This is true. They will welcome you into their homes and make you a part of their family. They will share all they have with you and love you and ask little in return. One of the most beautiful places to experience is Cuba. Hopefully Castro will remain with the Cuban people for at least another decade or so. If this is not the case, the Cuban people will never abandon their faith in just socialism. They have no homelessness, no drug addiction, no gang violence/random shootings, no segregation and a low cost lifestyle that most Canadians can only envy.
If you intend to visit Cuba it is recommended that you meet the Cuban people. Do not isolate yourself on those segregated resorts that travel agents try to force upon you. Personally I paid only for a ticket with return and backpacked about and rented rooms in houses with families. I had only positive experiences and a desire to visit that country once again and to keep in touch with the many new friends there.
